About Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour, devoted to understanding how people think, feel, behave, and learn. Psychology includes the exploration of the conscious and unconscious mind. Conscious mind refers to the thoughts, feelings, and memories in one’s awareness at any given moment. The unconscious mind refers to feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories which occur automatically and are not available to introspection. Nicely put, the conscious mind determines the actions, the unconscious mind determines the reactions (E. Stanley Jones). The degree to which conscious and unconscious phenomena are explored will be determined by the psychologists’ psychological approach.

There is a diverse array of psychological modalities that therapists employ, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness-based therapies. Many psychologists use a combination of approaches, all of which share one common theme: the effort to change something about a person. This might be working toward alleviating a client’s suffering or toward promoting human growth.

The goal of psychology is not just to study thoughts and behaviour, but to apply that knowledge to help solve everyday challenges, and ultimately improve one’s quality of life. When one engages in a process of therapy, the psychologist is there to hold and support the client through their difficult emotions, fears, or challenges that may be interfering with their ability to move forward in life. By working collaboratively, the therapist and client can together create a new understanding of the individual’s experience, allowing for transformation and human growth.
